The next Mercedes-AMG CLE 63 has been spotted several times, but a new Nurburgring video may have provided the clearest clue yet about what is hiding under its bonnet. The prototype sounds very much like a V8.

Finished in matte blue, the camouflaged test car picks up pace around the circuit before its exhaust note rises into a familiar V8 rumble. Mercedes-AMG has not confirmed the engine, but the sound adds weight to reports that the CLE 63 could use the brand’s new flat-plane-crank V8.

The prototype itself features camouflage at both ends, with a revised grille, sportier front bumper and new LED headlights visible at the front. New alloy wheels also appear to be part of the package.

At the rear, there is a subtle boot-lid spoiler, quad exhaust tips and an integrated diffuser, giving the coupe a suitably aggressive stance.

Mercedes-AMG recently revealed the limited-edition CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung, which uses a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 producing 646 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque. The same engine could potentially find its way into the CLE 63, although output may be different.
