VIDEO: Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series laps the Nurburgring in record 6 min 43 sec

The Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series has set a new lap record of the Nurburgring Nordschleife. It completed a lap of the circuit in 6 min 43.61 seconds. That’s 1.36 seconds faster than the V12 powered Lamborghini Aventador SVJ.

Mercedes roped in pro-driver Maro Engel for the task and this on-board video gives us a good idea of what it’s like to hot lap one of the most dreaded racetracks in the world.

Mercedes has been very transparent about changes the had to make to the car in order to be able to set a quick lap time. The coilovers were adjusted, while the sway bars were firmed up. The engineers also dialed in some negative camber at both ends, possibly to aid turn-in. A set of Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 MO tires were used on the record run.

The AMG GT Black Series is powered by a 4.0-liter, twin-turbo V8 engine that pumps out 720 hp @ 6700-6900 rpm and 590 lb-ft @ 2000-6000 rpm. The engine is paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. Mercedes claims that it will hit 62 mph 3.2 seconds and has a top speed is 202 mph.

Earlier, Sport Auto took the AMG GT Black Series to Hockenheim. It lapped the circuit in 1 min 43 seconds beating the Porsche 911 GT2 RS.
