Subaru has offered a first look at its own electric vehicle platform, marking a major step towards developing future EVs independently of Toyota. The Japanese automaker has confirmed that showroom models based on the new architecture are planned from 2029.
The dedicated platform was demonstrated at a test track in Japan, wearing a modified Outback wagon body. The prototype’s longer wheelbase gives away the substantial changes underneath, while the vehicle serves as a test bed for the technologies expected to feature in Subaru’s next generation of electric cars.

Interestingly, the all-wheel-drive prototype uses two e-axle drive units developed with Aisin, a supplier that also works with Toyota. The front motor produces 150 kW / 200 hp, while the rear unit delivers 230 kW / 308 hp. Combined output stands at 380 kW / 500+ hp, which Subaru says is enough to propel the test vehicle from 0-100 km/h / 0-62 mph in under four seconds.
Subaru still aims to make EVs account for half its annual global sales, but it now expects to reach that target later than its original 2030 deadline.
