Land Rover is giving Defender 90 buyers in Europe an unusual new option: they can now order the SUV without its rear-mounted spare wheel. The optional Spare Wheel Removal Kit gives the rugged off-roader a cleaner rear end while improving practicality in everyday driving.

Removing the spare wheel improves rear visibility and makes the Defender easier to manoeuvre in tight parking spaces. The lighter rear door also requires less room to swing open, which could be useful in cramped garages. There is a small weight saving too, although it won’t make any meaningful difference to performance or efficiency.

Interestingly, Land Rover has retained the standard fifth-door design rather than developing a completely new panel without the spare-wheel mounting points, keeping costs down.

Land Rover hasn’t revealed the price of deleting the spare wheel yet.
