Land Rover has previewed an extreme new Defender designed to bring genuine rally hardware to the road. Revealed at The Quail during Monterey Car Week, the limited-run Defender Dakar is a road-legal evolution of the Defender D7X-R that won its class at the 2026 Dakar Rally.
The Land Rover Defender Dakar is positioned above the Defender Octa, with hardware and driving modes derived directly from the rally machine.

Power comes from a twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8, producing 626 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque. The engine shares its basic architecture with the Octa, but is tuned without the restrictions imposed by racing regulations.
The suspension receives an equally serious overhaul. Coil springs replace the air suspension, while motorsport-grade Bilstein dampers are tuned to handle high-speed off-road impacts. Massive 35-inch all-terrain tyres are mounted on forged 20-inch wheels, while the spare wheel is relocated inside the cargo area alongside an integrated air compressor.

The Land Rover Defender Dakar also introduces Dunes and Gravel drive modes, plus a Flight Mode designed to manage suspension compression and rebound during big jumps. Roof-mounted light pods, a carbon-fibre bonnet and raised air intakes complete its desert-racer appearance.
Inside, there is a 2+2 layout with race-style bucket seats and proper interior trim. Paint options include Dakar Sand and Yanbu Turquoise.

Land Rover is currently accepting registrations of interest. Full specifications, production numbers and pricing will be announced at the 2027 Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia.
