Alpine is developing an all-electric successor to the A110, but the French sports car maker isn’t completely ruling out a combustion-powered version. The upcoming model will launch as an EV, although its underlying platform could offer more flexibility than initially expected.

Speaking to TopGear.com, Alpine UK boss Nicola Burnside explained that the new Alpine Performance Platform (APP) can accommodate different powertrain combinations. While the company remains committed to electrification, it hasn’t ruled out other possibilities for the future.

“The platform (dubbed ‘APP’ for Alpine Performance Platform) can take many different combinations, it’s really flexible.”

For now, the electric A110 is the priority. Alpine is targeting a lightweight package, with the new sports car expected to weigh no more than 1,500 kg. It will also retain a low-slung profile similar to the outgoing petrol-powered model.

Burnside also urged people to give the electric version a chance before worrying about a combustion alternative. No petrol-powered model has been confirmed, and Alpine says its immediate focus remains firmly on EVs.

“Everyone asks me if the platform can take multiple powertrains and whether we’re going to do a combustion car,” said Burnside, “and my answer is that everyone needs to try the electric one.”
