CEO Masahiro Moro has confirmed that the next-generation Mazda MX-5, internally known as the NE, is being developed with electric power in mind. What’s more interesting is the company’s insistence that it will remain light (under 1200 kg)—something most EVs struggle with due to heavy battery packs.
Mazda hasn’t shared detailed specs yet, but the focus is clear. Expect a compact battery, clever packaging, and a continued emphasis on balance rather than outright power. The goal isn’t to build the quickest electric roadster, but one that still feels alive on the twisties.
There’s also a strong chance the new car will retain rear-wheel drive, which enthusiasts love. Power figures remain under wraps, but don’t expect anything extreme.
The shift is inevitable. Regulations and emissions targets are pushing even the most iconic sports cars toward electrification. However, it has also been reported that the Mazda MX-5 would also go the hybrid route and feature the company’s new 2.5-litre Skyactiv-Z four-cylinder engine.
