BMW is recalling 189,130 cars from its 3-Series, 5-Series and 7-Series lineups over a starter motor issue that could potentially lead to a fire.
The problem concerns the starter relay, which does not have enough protection against water. Over time, moisture can enter the component and corrode its internal contacts. In some cases, this corrosion could cause an electrical short circuit, creating a fire risk around the starter motor.
The affected vehicles were built between July 29, 2014, and November 12, 2020. That means the recall covers cars from multiple generations, including the F30 and early G20 3 Series, F10 and G30 5 Series, and F01/F02 and G11/G12 7 Series.
The campaign has so far been issued in Germany. BMW dealers will address the problem by replacing the complete starter motor rather than repairing only the relay. The work will be carried out free of charge through BMW’s authorised dealer network.
