Hyundai appears to be tinkering with the idea of an open-top GT with a long bonnet and a rear-set cabin. A new patent describes a redesigned firewall and dashboard structure specifically addressing the challenges of such a convertible.

The patent explains that a long-hood convertible has fewer structural paths available to absorb crash forces than a coupe. Without a roof and pillars to help redirect those loads, the forces can cause parts of the dashboard to move backwards during an impact, potentially compromising safety.

Hyundai’s solution includes a structurally integrated strut-tower brace, along with a dedicated mounting area for the charging system and battery module. That suggests the vehicle being considered could be fully electric or use a highly electrified powertrain such as a plug-in hybrid or range-extender.

The layout also points towards a performance-focused car. A long bonnet, rearward cabin and double-wishbone front suspension are all consistent with a sporty, rear-drive or rear-biased GT.

Naturally, this does not confirm a production car. However, Hyundai and Genesis have already shown interest in the idea through concepts such as the Genesis X Convertible and X Gran Convertible.

A production version remains uncertain, but this patent shows that the idea is being taken seriously.
