Ferrari new rear wing patent

Ferrari’s new clever rear wing can bend and twist when needed

1 Min Read

Ferrari has filed a patent for a new rear wing that can bend and twist when needed. Unlike conventional active aero systems that rely on rigid, hinged surfaces, this design introduces flexibility into the equation.

Ferrari’s new system uses multiple aero elements mounted on a flexible base, supported by independent actuators. This allows the wing to deform laterally – it could shift downforce from one side to the other during aggressive cornering. On straights, the wing can return to a more neutral shape, reducing drag and improving efficiency.

Think of it as a wing that actively “reshapes” itself based on how the car is being driven. That said, making it production-ready won’t be easy. The materials used must handle repeated flexing under extreme loads while remaining lightweight.

As with most patents, there’s no confirmation that this tech will actually make its way into production cars anytime soon. Speaking of patents, Ferrari has also filed a patent for an electronic H-pattern manual shifter for automatic transmission.
