BMW XM faces an uncertain future as sales continue to fall

2 Min Read

The BMW XM could be heading toward the end of the road, with weak sales raising questions about the future of the brand’s flagship M SUV.

The XM sold just 7,608 units globally in 2025, making it BMW’s slowest-selling model. Things have become even tougher this year. Through June, global deliveries fell 22.4% to 2,816 vehicles compared with the same period last year.

When the XM launched around four years ago, BMW expected China to account for 23% of sales. The United States was projected to be its largest market at 26%, but demand there has also weakened. US sales dropped 4.9% in 2025 to 1,878 units.

The XM’s future is now uncertain enough to raise the possibility that BMW could eventually discontinue it. There are also few signs of a facelift. By this stage in a model’s lifecycle, prototype testing would normally have produced spy photos, but none have appeared so far.

A major update based on BMW’s Neue Klasse technology also appears unlikely. That leaves the XM in an unusual position. Its niche positioning and limited demand may not justify developing a successor, although BMW has not officially confirmed that the model will be discontinued.
