Audi reverts back to old model names for ICE and EVs
In a surprise move, Audi has announced that it is abandoning its new model naming strategy and going back to the old nomenclature for ICE, hybrids and EVs.
According to the company, the decision was taken following intense discussions with dealers and feedback from customers. The new naming system was causing confusion, and hence, it was decided to scrap it.
Earlier, Audi had switched to a new model nomenclature under which ICE and hybrid models were assigned odd numbers, while even numbers were reserved for EVs.
With the revised naming convention, the upcoming A7 will be called the A6, while its electric version will be called the A6 e-tron.
In its official statement, Audi said, “Going forward, the global alphanumeric model name will consist of one or more letters and a number. The letters A and Q continue to signify the distinction between low-floor and high-floor vehicles. The numbers – currently from one to eight – enable a clear classification independent of the type of powertrain. As a result, the previous distinction between different drivetrain technologies according to even and odd model numbers no longer applies.”
Contrary to earlier reports, Audi has confirmed that the new A6 will be unveiled on March 4, 2025.
