This might be the wildest party trick we’ve seen from an electric vehicle yet. A Chinese EV called the Denza Z9 can be seen drifting entirely on its own with a passenger on the front seat. No hands. No driver input. Just software doing its thing.
Denza is a brand owned by the popular Chinese EV maker BYD. We can see the Z9 in the video going around in circles, burning rubber and making clouds. Interestingly, there is no one in the driver’s seat. This EV is doing the stunt on its own. How?
Thanks to a newly released over-the-air update. Yes, Denza has released an OTA update, and owners can actually use it in the real world. All they have to do is draw a shape on the central touchscreen – say a circle or even a figure eight – and the Z9 will execute a controlled drift following that exact pattern.
Sure, it’s a gimmick feature. But it also shows just how far software-defined performance has come.
In other news, the Hongqi Guoya has become the most expensive Chinese car on sale in Russia. It is a direct challenger to the likes of the Mercedes-Maybach.
