Two interesting facts about new BMW M2 xDrive you should know

The BMW M2 is stepping into new territory. For the first time, the compact M car gets xDrive all-wheel drive. But beyond the headline, there are two key details that define this new version.

First, the gearbox. If you’re hoping for a manual, this is where things change. While the standard rear-wheel-drive M2 still offers a six-speed stick, the M2 xDrive is strictly automatic. It uses an eight-speed transmission designed to maximise performance and consistency, but it also means the most driver-focused element of the M2 experience is no longer part of the package.

Second, there’s what’s happening under the bonnet. The familiar 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged S58 straight-six carries on, producing around 473 hp, but now introduces a new pre-chamber combustion system called “M Ignite.” Borrowed from motorsport, it improves efficiency under high loads while retaining the engine’s sharp throttle response and linear power delivery. It’s also a preview of what’s coming across future M models as BMW prepares for stricter Euro 7 regulations.

To keep things “lively”, BMW has ensured that the xDrive system itself remains rear-biased and can even be switched into a pure rear-drive mode.

The BMW M2 xDrive will go on sale late summer, and will obviously cost more than the standard model. It will feature the BMW Individual Borusan Turkish Blue colour, which hasn’t been made available with any M2 before.
