People in Milan were treated to a jaw-dropping sight when an ultra-rare Mercedes-Benz C291 was spotted on the street. Created for the racing world, this engineering marvel isn’t something that you would casually find in an urban environment.

For the uninitiated, this isn’t just another vintage race car. It belongs to the motorsport’s wildest era. Built for the 1991 World Sportscar Championship, it was Mercedes’ response to strict new racing rules.

Instead of using a traditional, rumbling V8 engine, Mercedes and Sauber engineered a screaming, 3.5-litre flat-12 “boxer” engine capable of revving to an astonishing 13,200 rpm. Its screaming exhaust note sounded exactly like a classic Formula 1 car.

Just a look at the Mercedes-Benz C291 and you can tell the sheer amount of aerodynamics. With its bubble canopy cockpit and smooth, flowing silver curves, it looks more like a low-flying fighter jet than a car. It has been designed to slice through the air and also produce a massive amount of downforce thanks to its huge rear wing.
