One-off Porsche Flachbau RS could inspire the return of the 911 Slantnose

The Porsche 911 Slantnose could make an unexpected return as a production model. The German brand hasn’t confirmed it, but comments from a company executive suggest the idea is possible.

The latest inspiration is the one-off Flachbau RS, commissioned through Porsche’s Sonderwunsch program. While that car will remain a one-off, Porsche Vice President of Product and Individualisation Alexander Fabig said that bespoke projects can sometimes influence production cars.

“Yes. I mean, the idea of Sonderwunsch was always that this is an inspiration for our series products,” said Fabig. He added, “And we have various examples over the last 50 years where product substance started as a customer’s individual topic. And then it trickled down the process line of first becoming an exclusive Manufaktur option, maybe becoming a standard option later on, and then even becoming a series product.”

Fabig pointed to Porsche’s X50 and X51 power kits as an example. What began as an individual customer request eventually became an option and later helped lead to the 911 Turbo S.

“So if you think about the power kits X50 and X51 from back in the day, that started as a customer individual. Then we had it as an option. And then later on, the 911 Turbo S was the result of this initial thought. So yes, it’s very well possible that you see not exactly this, but elements of it, or reinterpretations of [it] as a series offer.”

For now, there is no confirmation that a new Slantnose 911 is coming. But Porsche’s history shows that customer ideas can sometimes become something much bigger.
