New Civic Type R races last-gen model

UK’s AutoTrader has uploaded a new Youtube video that compares the 2023 Civic Type R with the previous gen model. The last-gen FK8 Type R came with slightly more aggressive exteriors while the newer FL5 looks a bit more sober and mature. That said, both the cars get big wings, functional aero bits and triple tail pipes to distinguish them from the regular Civic.

In the first race, the FL5 got a better start. It maintained this lead all the way to the chequered flag and beat the old FK8 by a car length. Both cars have similar powertrains, but it is the improved transmission that gave the FL5 the advantage on the track. It was able to put down its power more effectively.

Next up, the team did a rolling start which almost negated the new Civic’s advantage. This means, both the cars were neck and neck right from the start line all the way till the finish. The FL5 does make slightly more power than the FK8, but it is more heavier as well as expensive of the two.

In 2023, Honda gave the Civic a facelift. That said both the car’s come with Honda’s 2.0-litre turbo petrol motor. THe K20C1 four-cylinder makes 315 HP and 310 lb-ft of torque. The older one makes a tad less power at 306 HP and 295 lb-ft. Both cars are equipped with 6-speed manual transmission.

Coming to the pricing, the 2023 Civic Type R is priced at US$44,390. This is a lot of money for a car that essentially performs more or less the same as the previous generation version.
