New BMW X5 will get a V8 engine in the M Performance version

1 Min Read

The next-generation BMW X5 has five different powertrains—petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid, fully electric, and even hydrogen. But for enthusiasts, one key ingredient seemed missing at launch: a proper V8.

BMW is saving its iconic twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 for a hotter, M Performance version of the new X5. While it won’t be a full-blown X5 M, this “M Lite” variant is expected to carry the X5 M60 badge. Interestingly, BMW is phasing out the “i” suffix for petrol-powered cars, reserving it exclusively for EVs going forward.

At launch, the new X5 lineup is offering inline-six engines on the combustion side, keeping things efficient but arguably less exciting. The V8-powered M60, however, is scheduled to arrive later this year, and it promises to bring back that unmistakable character only a big-capacity engine can deliver.

And here’s the part purists will appreciate: it won’t be a plug-in hybrid. This is expected to be a proper V8 experience, with sound, response, and performance taking centre stage.
