McLaren 570S Spider to be Launched in 2017

McLaren today confirmed that an open-top 570S Spider will be launched later this year. A convertible version of the base 540C is however not in the pipeline.

“With the 540C, by the time you add options it can cost the same as a 570S, which is why we only offer it in certain markets,” McLaren boss Mike Flewitt said. “And because of that it doesn’t make sense to do a 540C Spider. There will never be a 540 GT either.”

Like the 650S Spider, the upcoming 570S Spider will also boast a folding hard top roof. Although, the car is expected to be slightly heavier than the coupe, expect similar levels of performance.

Speaking of performance, the 570S Spider will use the same 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 engine tuned to produce 562 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque.

Due to the extra weight, we can expect the 570S Spider to achieve a 0-60 mph time of 3.5 sec. The 200 mph top speed would most certainly be limited to a lower figure with the roof down.

Meanwhile, an open-top version of the recently revealed 720S is definitely on cards.
