Ferrari could be working on its most advanced aero yet

1 Min Read

Ferrari appears to be exploring a new aspect in aerodynamic technology, and its latest patent offers a glimpse at what could be coming next.

Filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office, the application depicts a futuristic mid-engined hypercar featuring an elaborate aerodynamic package. The design itself may never reach production, but some of its ideas could eventually find their way onto future Ferraris.

The most interesting feature is at the rear. The car appears to use an extendable aerodynamic element that can move rearwards from its normal position, effectively creating a longer tail when additional aerodynamic performance is required. It is paired with a large diffuser, Formula 1-inspired vents and an integrated light bar.

Ferrari has also illustrated similar active-aero thinking on the Purosangue. In that application, the rear lighting elements appear capable of angling downwards to work with a small rear spoiler, potentially improving aerodynamic efficiency without adding a conventional large wing.

As outright power becomes increasingly difficult to exploit on the road, smarter aerodynamics could become the next big performance aspect. There is, of course, no guarantee that these systems will reach production.
