Bathurst 1000 Supercar race halted due to an Echidna
In what could be a world first, a rogue echidna brought out the Safety Car at the 2021 Bathurst 1000 Supercar race in Australia.
The cute little creature was spotted at the Cutting on lap 105 of the race. Luckily, drivers were able to dodge him as he gently strolled across the tarmac. With concrete walls on either side of the track, the echidna had nowhere to go and therefore the officials decided to halt the race. Racing resumed momentarily as one of the marshals pulled him out of harm’s way.
The Bathurst 1000 is the highlight of the Supercar Championship and one of our favorites. This year, it was Chaz Mostert who took pole with a blistering lap of 2 min 03.373 seconds. Shane van Gisbergen led the field, ahead of Mostert after the brief Safety Car period. But, it would be the pairing of Mostert and Holdsworth who went on to win the race.
