An undisguised next-gen BMW 3 Series sedan has been spotted in Munich, revealing a rear design that looks heavily influenced by the brand’s Neue Klasse design-based i3.

The new taillights are wide and stretch almost towards the centre of the boot, leaving a small gap for the BMW logo. The rear bumper is packed with sharp angles and creases, giving the car a considerably busier appearance. The upcoming model also features quad exhaust outlets.

The dark-coloured prototype makes the taillights appear almost blacked out, although this could simply be down to the paint and lighting conditions. The silver alloy wheels also feature a fairly intricate design, contrasting with the darker bodywork. But they too look too busy for a 3 Series, like an aftermarket option.

Production of the new 3 Series is scheduled to begin in the second half of this year. One of the highlights will be the M350 xDrive, powered by a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six with 48V mild-hybrid assistance.

With 426 hp and 427 lb ft, the all-wheel-drive sedan can reportedly accelerate from 0-62 mph in 4.1 seconds through its eight-speed automatic gearbox.

The official reveal now appears to be just around the corner.
