1 Min Read

Porsche has officially ended its involvement with Bugatti and Rimac, closing a significant chapter in the Volkswagen Group’s high-performance car story. The German automaker completed the sale of its stakes in Bugatti Rimac and Rimac Group on Sept 9, following regulatory approval.

The deal will bring Porsche around $1.16 billion, with approximately $290.7 million already allocated towards its pension obligations. For Porsche, the move is part of a broader effort to focus investment on its core business and upcoming products.

The decision also marks the end of VW Group’s direct involvement with Bugatti after almost three decades. Volkswagen acquired Bugatti, Lamborghini and Bentley in 1998 as it expanded aggressively into the luxury and performance-car market.

Bugatti Rimac was formed in 2021, combining Bugatti’s traditional combustion-engine expertise with Rimac’s electric technology. Rimac Group held a 55% stake, while Porsche owned the remaining 45%. Porsche also held a 20.6% interest in Rimac Group, which has now been sold.

Now, Rimac Group remains the majority owner of Bugatti Rimac, and Mate Rimac becomes president of Bugatti Automobiles alongside his role as CEO.
