Ten custom number plates auctioned in Melbourne have raised a combined $1.6 million, with the top-selling combination fetching a whopping $365,000.
The plate ‘620’ led the auction, followed by ‘9·118’ at $170,000, ‘8·585’ at $155,000 and ‘2·122’ at $140,000.

The other plates offered included ‘88·988’, ‘13·000’, ‘825’, ‘66·606’, ‘6·988’ and ‘44·440’. The ‘825’ combination was particularly interesting, with VicRoads (it operates registration and licensing services on behalf of the Victorian State Government) suggesting it could appeal to motorists of Chinese heritage. The number is associated with spiritual growth, positive change and personal development in Chinese culture.
VicRoads says revenue from custom plate sales helps fund modernisation efforts, including improvements to digital services and customer experience. However, it is no longer entirely government-owned.
