YouTuber rebuilds wrecked McLaren 600LT with $17 Mercedes part

1 Min Read

British automotive YouTuber Mat Armstrong has revived a wrecked McLaren 600LT in just seven days, relying on clever part-swapping and a $17 Mercedes-Benz component.

After buying the damaged supercar sight unseen in Greece, Armstrong discovered the car would not start due to a blown pyrotechnic electrical fuse. Rather than paying steep supercar markup for an official McLaren replacement, he fitted a fully compatible $17 Mercedes unit.

The improvised repairs didn’t stop there. To fix the damaged suspension, the team adapted a lower control arm from a McLaren 720S, modifying it to work with the 600LT’s mechanical anti-roll bar instead of the 720S’s hydraulic setup. Additionally, a cracked cast-aluminium door hinge was welded, and the deployed seatbelts were sent out for pretensioner rebuilds.

The total cost for the project—including buying the car, shipping, parts, and labour—came to approximately $141,000.
