Why BMW won’t turn the electric M3 into a 1000+ hp monster

In today’s EV era, more power often seems like the only goal. But BMW is taking a surprisingly measured approach with the upcoming electric BMW M3.

According to M division boss Frank van Meel, extracting outrageous figures—well beyond 1,000 horsepower—is technically possible. In fact, the brand has already proven it with the extreme BMW Vision Driving Experience concept, which pushed out around 1,341 hp.

Van Meel made it clear that such extreme outputs bring compromises. Efficiency drops, thermal management becomes more complex, and drivability can suffer. For a production car, especially one wearing the M badge, balance matters just as much as outright numbers.

That doesn’t mean the electric BMW M3 will be slow. It’s expected to comfortably outperform today’s M3 CS, which already delivers 543 hp. While exact figures remain under wraps, a sub-900 hp output seems likely.

BMW plans to use a quad-motor setup, delivering all-wheel drive with the option to decouple the front axle entirely. That means you can switch from maximum grip to classic rear-wheel-drive operation at will.
