Was the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe a bold vision, or simply a project that couldn’t be stopped once it began?
As per media reports, an unnamed executive from Mercedes-Benz recently admitted that one of its electric models “shouldn’t even exist.” These are really strong words—especially coming from within the company.

By the time concerns surfaced, it was already too late. Development had gone too far, and the cars had to be launched regardless. The financial commitment alone was staggering.
Reports suggest more than $1 billion was spent on AMG’s electric performance programs, while broader projects like the Mercedes-Benz EQS and EQE SUV demanded investments nearing $5.7 million

That kind of spending would be easier to justify if the results matched expectations. Unfortunately, they didn’t. Sales of the EQ range reportedly dropped by as much as 90% in 2024. “It was clear then that these cars were the biggest failures in the company’s history,” the executive said.
While we are hearing this huge insider news, Mercedes-AMG seems to be working on an even more powerful GT 4-Door Coupe EV. Reports have emerged stating that a lightly camouflaged prototype has been caught testing.
