The latest recall campaign from Volkswagen could be far larger than expected. As per reports, almost four million vehicles worldwide may eventually be affected.
The estimated figure includes around two million Volkswagen models, more than one million Skodas, about 700,000 Audis and roughly 200,000 Seats.
In Germany, data from the Federal Motor Transport Authority shows that models including the Golf, Golf Variant, Tiguan, Touran and Caddy are involved. The Audi Q3 appears to be the only Audi model affected, while Seat models are thought to include the Ateca and Tarraco built between April 2016 and September 2024.
The issue centres on a right-hand steering rack mounting bolt that can become vulnerable to moisture and corrosion. The risk may be particularly relevant in countries where road salt is widely used during winter.
Fortunately, the fix appears relatively simple. Volkswagen is expected to replace the affected bolt with a more corrosion-resistant version, rather than carrying out major repairs.
