Tesla has introduced an unusual new feature that lets drivers leave a Supercharger without manually unplugging the charging cable.
Called Emergency Drive Away, the function allows a Tesla to be shifted into Drive while it is still charging. The feature is currently available only at Superchargers in the US and requires software update 2026.38.3.

Under normal circumstances, drivers must disconnect the charging handle before leaving. With Emergency Drive Away, selecting the on-screen “Activate” option triggers the system, which releases the charging handle from the vehicle so it can drive away.
There is, however, a significant catch. Tesla warns that using the function will damage both the vehicle and the Supercharger, while deliberate misuse could result in additional penalties.
The idea is clearly intended for genuine emergencies, not as a new way to end a charging session.
