Porsche Reportedly Prepping a Spiritual Successor to the 928

After two long decades of discontinuation, Porsche finally seems ready to develop a 21st century Porsche 928.

There have long been rumors of Porsche considering the development of spiritual successors to the Porsche 928 and the 960. While the development of a new 960 as a mid-engined Ferrari rival has come out as nothing more than a rumor, it seems Porsche has finally decided to bring out a front-engined coupe as a modern 928.

Expected to be named after its predecessor, the development of the grand tourer is already underway in Stuttgart, Autobild reports. The new 928 is expected to utilize the Panamera platform for its resurrection. The model will also share other key elements like aesthetic cues, interiors and more importantly the powertrain with the Panamera. The 928 had the distinction of being the company’s first production V8 powered model and the only front-engined V8 coupe. Porsche will likely use the V8 from the Panamera and might also build a hybrid version using the Turbo S E-Hybrid powertrain.

The Porsche 928 could rival the likes of the Mercedes-AMG S63 Coupe and the upcoming BMW M8.

The report also suggests that a coupe version of the Cayenne is also being developed. The Cayenne coupe will take the form of a slant-backed crossover to go head to head with the BMW X6 and Mercedes GLE coupe. An electric Macan is yet another model that might come out of Stuttgart taking aim at the Jaguar I-Pace, Tesla Model X and the forthcoming BMW iX3.

Now only if Porsche also made a new 960!
