Ever since the Audi R8 bowed out in early 2024, the German auto giant has been missing a halo machine that defines the brand. The RS lineup is quick, no doubt. But it doesn’t quite replace the drama of a mid-engined supercar. But, hey, there’s a glimmer of hope.
Speaking ahead of the first drives of the new Audi RS5, Audi CEO Gernot Dollner made it clear that the idea of a flagship supercar isn’t dead. In fact, his enthusiasm for performance engines says a lot. “I’m a big fan of V8s,” he said, adding that there’s no real limitation to using such engines where possible.
Naturally, the conversation turned to the possibility of a next-gen R8. And interestingly, Dollner didn’t shut it down. Instead, he pointed toward the impressive V8 found in the Lamborghini Temerario – a 10,000 rpm, twin-turbo mad powerhouse he openly admired.
That’s where things get intriguing. Audi, under the Volkswagen Group umbrella, has a history of sharing platforms and tech. The original R8 had close ties with the Lamborghini Gallardo and Huracan. So, a future R8 borrowing Temerario’s V8 doesn’t sound far-fetched.
Nothing is confirmed. Not yet. But this wasn’t a denial either. It felt more like a door left slightly open. And if that door leads to a high-revving, mid-engined Audi once again, enthusiasts will be more than ready.
