New Mercedes patent could turn the electric G-Class into a boat

1 Min Read

The Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology is already capable of tackling serious water crossings, but a new patent describes something far more unusual. It could potentially allow the electric G-Class to float and travel across water.

The proposed system uses removable inflatable or foam sections inside the wheel arches to provide buoyancy. Their volume could be adjusted independently to compensate for uneven loads or moving water. The wheels would remain steerable too, allowing them to act like rudders.

The system could also take advantage of the G 580’s four individually controlled electric motors. By varying torque between the wheels, or even spinning them in opposite directions, the vehicle could potentially change direction on water and help itself reach the shore.

The technology could even be stored around the spare-wheel area and inflated using the vehicle’s tyre compressor.

As of now, the patent does not confirm a future amphibious G-Class. It remains an engineering concept.
