The upcoming Lotus Esprit will offer different powertrain options. Alongside the already confirmed hybrid V8, the 2028 flagship will also be available with a V6, giving buyers a lighter and potentially more accessible alternative.
Codenamed Type 135, Lotus wants the new Esprit to be as lightweight as possible. The company is targeting a kerb weight of around 1.5 tonnes for the V8 version, which is an ambitious figure for a hybrid supercar expected to produce more than 1,000 hp.
The V6 option is particularly significant because the same engine is planned for the next-generation Emira replacement. Both the V6 and V8 powertrains are being developed by Horse, the powertrain company jointly owned by Geely and Renault.
Lotus says the Esprit will use an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission engineered to handle high torque without adding unnecessary weight. The car is expected to be built alongside the Emira at Lotus’ Hethel facility in Britain, with its launch planned for 2028.
