Testing of the upcoming Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series took an unexpected turn when a prototype caught fire at the Nurburgring Nordschleife.
Images from the track show the heavily camouflaged test car still in motion with flames emerging around its right-rear wheel. Another shot captures the fire growing larger, while the right-side LED taillight also appears to have stopped working.
The driver managed to bring the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series to a stop, but the flames intensified shortly afterwards. Several people can then be seen tackling the blaze with fire extinguishers before it could spread further.
Fortunately, the test driver escaped without injury.
It remains unclear what caused the fire, and there’s no indication yet whether it was related to the powertrain, brakes, electrical system or some other component.
