While the automotive industry continues its gradual shift towards electrification, Mazda isn’t ready to give up on petrol and diesel engines just yet.
Moritz Oswald, Mazda Europe’s Project Manager for Product Planning and Co-Creation, has made it clear that combustion engines will continue to play an important role in the company’s global strategy.
“Part of our strategy is that we want the right engine for the right customer,” Oswald said. More importantly, he confirmed, “We will not kill the combustion engine tomorrow.”
Mazda’s approach reflects the different rates at which electric vehicles are being adopted around the world. While EVs are becoming increasingly prominent in Europe and other regions, combustion-powered cars remain highly relevant in several major markets.
Oswald specifically pointed towards the United States and Japan, where EV adoption remains comparatively lower, adding that combustion engines are still “globally, super relevant.”
That doesn’t mean Mazda is ignoring electrification. Instead, the Japanese automaker appears determined to maintain multiple powertrain options, allowing it to adapt to different markets and customer requirements rather than committing entirely to one technology.
