Lotus Theory 1 concept previews future supercar design

Lotus has revealed a new electric supercar concept called Theory 1. It will form the foundation for all future Lotus cars.

The Theory 1 supercar is based on a carbon fibre tub and features composite and polycarbonate bodywork. It measures 4490 mm in length and has a wheelbase of 2650 mm. Lotus claims an overall weight of under 1600 kg.

At the heart of the Theory 1 concept is a 70 kWh battery pack powering two electric motors, one on each axle. The combined output is 987 hp, allowing the car to accelerate from 0-62 mph in under 2.5 seconds. Top speed is 200 mph, while the claims WLTP range is 250 miles.

The Lotus Theory 1 is a pretty radical concept, not just in terms of its powertrain, but also its design. It has a glass canopy made from recycled glass and unique doors that lift up and slide rearwards. Inside, you have a 3-seat configuration with the driver’s seat positioned in the centre.

Ben Payne, Vice President of Design, Lotus Group said, “With Theory 1, we’ve built on everything Lotus has achieved so far in its 76-year history, to push the boundaries for what it means to drive a performance vehicle. We want to demonstrate that you don’t need to compromise – with both digital and analogue capabilities working harmoniously in the future car. In doing this, we are able to bring drivers the best possible immersive driving experience with raw emotion, functionality and connectivity, at the core.”
