Gordon Murray Special Vehicles has revealed its latest supercar, the S1, at The Quail during Monterey Car Week. Developed from the S1 LM platform, the new model takes a more touring-focused approach while retaining the engineering philosophy of its more extreme sibling.
At the heart of the S1 is a bespoke 4.2-litre naturally aspirated Cosworth V12, producing up to 690 PS and revving all the way to a remarkable 12,100 rpm. Even better, it is paired with a proper manual gearbox, giving the driver a level of involvement that is becoming increasingly rare among modern supercars.
Gordon Murray says the engine has also been tuned to deliver substantially more accessible torque, making the S1 better suited to long-distance driving without sacrificing its character.
The S1 may share its basic design language and DNA with the S1 LM, but there is little shared bodywork. Every exterior panel has been redesigned specifically for the new car, giving it a distinct identity.
The S1 features all-new active aerodynamics, revised suspension and greater refinement, while the cabin has been designed with a stronger focus on luxury and touring comfort.
That combination makes the S1 an interesting proposition. It has the screaming V12 and manual transmission enthusiasts crave, yet it is designed to be more usable than an uncompromising track-focused machine.
