A violent crash involving a Ferrari SF90 Spider on Australia’s Gold Coast has highlighted just how advanced modern supercar safety has become. Despite the car being torn apart in the impact, the driver walked away without injury.
The car, reportedly driven by property developer Sam Gordon, is said to have left a roundabout, mounted a curb, and collided with a tree. The aftermath is shocking. The Ferrari appears split into sections, with severe damage to both the front and rear.
While it may look catastrophic, the way the Ferrari SF90 Spider broke apart is actually part of its design. Like many high-performance machines from Ferrari, it’s built around a rigid carbon-fibre passenger cell. This central structure is incredibly strong and designed to remain intact in a crash.
Surrounding it are engineered crumple zones—front and rear sections meant to absorb and dissipate energy. In a heavy impact, these areas can deform or even detach, reducing the forces transferred to the driver.
That’s exactly what seems to have happened here that saved the owner’s life.
