The 488 GTB is a capable supercar. It’s a fitting update to the absolutely magnificent 458 italia. The 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 inside the 488 has already won the ‘Engine of the year’ award a couple of times. Now, the car has been chosen as the Motor Trend Best Driver’s Car.
Even with competition constituting the likes of Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, Aston Martin DB11, Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE and Corvette Grand Sport Z07, Lexus LC 500, Mazda Miata RF, McLaren 570GT, Mercedes-AMG GT R, Nissan GT-R NISMO, and the Porsche 718 and Porsche 911 Turbo S, the Ferrari remained victorious.
It was a tough call, nevertheless. Motor Trend worked it all down in a week with testing done at Auto Club Speedway and Laguna Seca. The cars were also put to their paces on public roads somewhere in California.
The 488 GTB lapped the Mazda raceway Laguna seca in 1:31.68, which is just a second and two off of the Mclaren P1’s and The Porsche 918 Spyder’s lap times respectively. However, in the eight year history of the award, the 488 GTB isn’t the only Ferrari to win the award. It’s predecessor, the 458 italia astonished the Motor Trend crew in 2011 with its unrivaled performance, winning itself the Best Driver’s Car award that year.
Ferrari commented on the announcement of its mid-engined model winning the precious accolade – “In nominating the Ferrari 488 GTB as its Best Driver’s Car, Motor Trend is celebrating those characteristics our clients recognize and demand,” Enrico Galliera, Ferrari’s marketing chief said. “We are committed to developing Ferraris that excel in terms of driving pleasure—usable performance, razor-sharp responses, and great handling. In other words, the quintessential sports car.”
