McLaren supercars are undoubtedly some of the fastest, most exciting driving machines on the planet. Their latest W1 hypercar has received rave reviews from journalists who have praised how quickly it accelerates to dizzying speeds.
Flagship models like the W1 and F80 are built with a specific set of customers in mind. Among them is a small group of individuals who not only appreciate the technology that goes into these cars but also value a man-machine interface that feels less digital and more analogue.
These are the enthusiasts among elites who have compelled carmakers to bring back the manual transmission – the Ferrari 12Cilindri Manuale is the most recent example. Koenigsegg did the same with the CC850. Then there are cars like De Tomaso P72 and Pagani Utopia, which also offer a proper manual gearbox.
Soon, we will see a manual McLaren. The new project, codenamed P50, is said to be a limited-edition hypercar with a stick shift. Now, we still don’t know whether it’s an old-school H-pattern or a trick shift-by-wire gearbox like the 12Cilindri Manuale.
We’ve been told that the McLaren P50 will be more expensive than the W1, which is upwards of $2 million. Fewer than 100 cars are likely to be built. The car will make its public debut at The Quail next month.
