Porsche has no plans to move production to the United States, despite rising import costs making European-built cars more expensive for American buyers.

Speaking after Audi announced a $4 billion investment in a new Georgia factory, Porsche CFO Jochen Breckner explained why the sports car maker is taking a different route. Porsche’s relatively low production volumes, combined with its extensive European supplier network, make local assembly difficult to justify.

Even if Porsche built cars in America, it would still need to ship engines and other components across the Atlantic. As a result, the company believes moving production would offer limited benefits.

For now, that means Porsche’s entire US lineup, including the Cayenne, will continue to be built in Europe and exported to America. European-built vehicles currently face a 15 percent US import tariff, in addition to the existing 2.5 percent base rate.

Breckner also isn’t counting on tariffs disappearing anytime soon. Porsche is instead planning its business around the current 15 percent rate, with tariff-related costs expected to reach the high hundreds of millions of euros in 2026.
