Xiaomi could be preparing to expand its car lineup with a new flagship sedan. A trademark application for “XIAOMI SU9 LUX” in China has sparked speculation about the company’s next model, although Xiaomi has yet to confirm its plans or the name of a production car.
Spy shots and reports suggest the sedan could measure more than 5.2 metres in length, with a wheelbase of around 3.1 metres. If those figures prove accurate, it would be a sizeable luxury car, with plenty of room for rear-seat passengers.
The prototype is also reported to feature rear-wheel steering, redesigned side-camera housings and additional side-mounted radar sensors.
The name itself is worth noting. Chinese automakers often use the number nine for flagship models, while the “LUX” suffix could suggest a stronger focus on luxury. However, Xiaomi has not previously used this naming format.
A large sedan could make sense in China, where extended-wheelbase versions of the Audi A6, Mercedes-Benz E-Class and BMW 5 Series are popular with business buyers.
