2019 Frankfurt Motor Show: Land Rover Defender Returns

The nameplate has returned to take on the competition in a never-seen-before form. Spring 2020 will see the 2020 Land Rover Defender back in the field kicking ass and taking names.

The 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show served as the pedestal for the all-new 2020 Land Rover Defender’s debut. The rugged and super-modern off-roader will arrive in dealerships by spring 2020 in 110 configuration. Four accessory packs will be available for the customer to deck up the 110 variant – Explorer, Adventure, Country, and Urban. Short-wheelbase and commercial variants will reach showrooms later that year.

Geared up to deal with the challenges and challengers of the new age, this is set to be the toughest vehicle in the Land Rover range. That D7x architecture deserves credit there. The lightweight all-aluminum monocoque construction makes the 2020 Defender a lot stronger than the body-on-frame structure it replaces.

Standing on fully-independent suspension with a ground clearance of 291 mm, 39 degree approach, 28 degree breakover, and 40 degeee departure angles, the 2020 Land Rover Defender also benefits from the twin-speed transfer box and permanent four-wheel drive when it has to go off-road. The SUV has an impressive towing capacity of 8,201 lbs too, which will be helpful when rescuing your buddy’s 4X4 stuck in the mud.

Serious off-roaders will love the variety of systems onboard which will make life easier when venturing into uncharted territories – a choice of three settings for the throttle and gearbox response, steering and traction control, Configurable Terrain Response, Center Slip Limited, Center and Rear Slip Limited options, Wade Sensing, Land Rover All-Terrain Progress Control, and ClearSight Ground View to name a few.

Buyers in the US can choose between a 2.0-liter 296 hp turbocharged 4-cylinder gasoline engine named P300 and a 3.0-liter 395 hp 6-cylinder Mild-Hybrid Electric Vehicle (MHEV) powertrain named P400. An 8-speed ZF automatic transmission and twin-speed transfer box transfer power to the wheels.

Prices for the Defender 110 P300 start from $49,900 and the body style will come in Defender, Defender S, Defender SE, Defender HSE, Defender X and Defender First Edition trims.
