$142 million Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR casually driving in Monaco

A 1954 Mercedes W196 R Streamliner was sold at auction for $54 million earlier this month. But it is by no means the most expensive car ever sold. That title goes to the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Ulenhaut Coupe.

Only two of these classic race cars exist, out of which one was reportedly sold at auction in 2022 for $142 million. Now, you would expect such a valuable car to be tucked away in a garage or a museum. That’s not the case with this car, though.

A few weeks back, the 300 SLR Ulenhaut Coupe was spotted in Monaco. A video posted on social media shows the owner casually driving down the famous Fairmont Hairpin and later towards Sainte Devote.

The 300 SLR is based on the W196 GP that won Juan Manuel Fangio two F1 world titles. It is powered by a 3.0-liter straight-eight engine, and has a top speed of 180 mph, making it one of the fastest street-legal cars of its time.
