Lamborghini kills its electric supercar before it’s even launched

Lamborghini has scrapped its plans to enter the EV segment. The Italian supercar brand has killed its electric supercar even before it sees the light of day and will instead focus on plug-in hybrids.

Stephan Winkelmann, President and CEO of Lamborghini, stated that developing EVs risked becoming “an expensive hobby” for the brand, as the “acceptance curve” for battery-powered cars among its customer base was getting “close to zero”.

Lamborghini’s first all-electric concept car, the Lanzador, was unveiled in 2023. The company has no plans to put it into production. It will now be replaced with a plug-in hybrid model. In fact, Winkelmann confirmed that by 2030, Lamborghini’s product lineup will comprise only plug-in hybrids.

Winkelmann said that the sports car enthusiasts did not find a “specific emotional connection” with EVs, because they missed the noise of a car with an internal combustion engine.

“Plug-in hybrids offer the best of both worlds, combining the agility and low-rev boost of electric battery technology with the emotion and power output of an ICE,” he added.
