Mercedes-Benz isn’t convinced that extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) would appeal to its customers, arguing that its existing plug-in hybrids already offer enough electric range for everyday use.

Christoph Starzynski, the company’s Vice President of Product Strategy and Product Steering, explains that Mercedes’ plug-in hybrids can cover more than 124 km (77 miles) on electric power in Europe, which he believes is sufficient for most daily journeys.

The company also points to DC fast-charging capability on its plug-in hybrid models, allowing owners to recharge during longer stops while retaining a petrol engine for journeys that demand it.

Mercedes is also questioning whether extending electric range from around 97 km (60 miles) to 322 km (200 miles) would make a plug-in hybrid significantly more attractive to its buyers.

Instead, the company sees two clear choices: a plug-in hybrid for drivers who want both electric driving and a combustion engine, or a fully electric vehicle for those seeking greater electric range. Starzynski says a decent battery-electric vehicle should offer roughly 450–644 km (280–400 miles) of range.

For now, Mercedes doesn’t see enough customer demand to justify adding EREVs to its lineup.
