Mercedes-Benz is exploring a rather unusual way to make driving more comfortable: a steering wheel that can actually change size.
A new patent describes a wheel equipped with at least three telescopic adjustment elements on each side. Instead of only moving the wheel closer to or farther from the driver, these mechanisms could alter its diameter.

A larger wheel could suit drivers who prefer a more relaxed hand position or sit closer to the wheel, while shrinking it could create extra space for taller drivers or make getting in and out easier. Mercedes also suggests a smaller setting could provide a more sporting, race-car-like feel.
The patent drawings show a split, yoke-like design rather than a conventional circular wheel. The angle of the wheel could also be adjusted independently of the normal steering-column height adjustment.
Mercedes envisions power-assisted motors controlling the mechanism, although hydraulic or pneumatic systems are also mentioned.
It is an interesting idea, although, as with any patent, there is no guarantee this clever steering wheel will ever make it into a production Mercedes.
