The BYD Yangwang U8 is getting closer to an Australian launch after receiving Australian Design Rule certification, a major step toward hitting local roads. The massive luxury SUV has appeared in the Australian Government’s vehicle approval database with an impressive powertrain.
The Australian-spec U8 combines a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with four electric motors, each producing 220 kW / 295 hp. Total system output is rated at 880 kW, or around 1,180 hp, while overseas models produce up to 1,520 Nm / 1,121 lb ft of torque. BYD claims a 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) time of just 3.5 seconds.

But straight-line performance is only part of the story. The U8 can perform a crab walk and tank turn, allowing it to move sideways or rotate almost on the spot. It also has an emergency flotation function that can keep the SUV afloat and moving in deep water for a limited period.
Inside, it’s every bit as extravagant, with leather upholstery, multiple huge displays, night vision, a refrigerator and a 22-speaker Dynaudio sound system.

For now, Australia appears set to receive the five-seat U8 rather than the longer U8L.
