BMW could soon have another 5 Series wearing a police livery in Australia, with the latest-generation 540d now being evaluated by New South Wales Police.
The sedan has been handed over for a three-week survey process to determine whether it is suitable for wider use in Highway Patrol duties. It follows the previous-generation 530d, which was used by police in NSW, Victoria and Tasmania as local Holden Commodore and Ford Falcon production came to an end.

The new 540d brings more performance and extra traction. Its 3.0-litre turbo-diesel inline-six produces 223 kW (300 hp) and 670 Nm (494 lb ft), compared with 195 kW (261 hp) and 620 Nm (457 lb ft) in the old 530d. Unlike its rear-wheel-drive predecessor, the new model also sends its power through all-wheel drive.

For private buyers, the 540d starts at $137,400 before on-road costs. Police versions, however, typically feature different specifications with some luxury equipment removed.
