Toyota Celica could return as a new AWD GR performance model

Toyota appears to be preparing a comeback for one of its most familiar sports-car names. The Celica could return for an eighth generation, more than 20 years after the previous model disappeared from showrooms.

The company has yet to confirm when the new car will arrive, but a test mule wearing a radically different two-door body has already been spotted. That suggests development is well underway.

The new model, reportedly known internally as the Celica Sport, is expected to become an entry point for Toyota’s growing GR performance range.

Power could come from the same 2.0-litre engine being developed for the upcoming MR2. Unlike the mid-engined MR2, however, the Celica is expected to retain its traditional front-mounted engine layout. The engine is also expected to form part of a hybrid system similar to the setup used in the Corolla.

Toyota is reportedly planning four-wheel drive for the new Celica, with the system expected to feature on both road and rally versions.
